Originality: the western obsession

How come that the western world is obsessed by the idea of originality? The thought of constantly invensting something new and yet to be seen? This tendency seems to apply to different fields, not only art. While in the other hand, the far east, with countries such as China, Japan amongst other, focus on copying. One of the finest arts in china are caligraphy, where you learn by reproducing works of earlier masters. It is quite similar to classical art schools, such as école des beaux arts in Paris, where the classical principle of studying art was to firstly study and draw sculptures and only after mastering that, moving on to the human body with a live model. In turn, after mastering the live model, one was then able to learn croquis (sketching a nude model).
